9/29

Hey PIU-Guam Students, here is some news and encouragement for you. . .

Interim President to Students
(IP to Ss) News.

Hey, Students,

There is a reason that what you do in your classes is called "work," as in class-work or homework.  It is work. It takes time to do it. You have to expend energy, and often you have to step out of your comfort zone in order to get it done. This is particularly true in classes that require you to make a presentation before the class.
Do the work. If you are behind, catch up. Make an appointment with your teacher and find out how you can succeed. Don't listen to the voice in your head that says you are a failure.

Here is some news, you need to know:
  • I understand that the next volleyball game is a Whiteout. Ask Alex for more information.
  • Tonight is a "Focus Night." Sounds like fun.
  • October 19 is the Micronesia in Guam concert. It is a cultural event/fundraiser for PIU.
  • Dave Owen is being treated at Stanford University hospital. So far they have doing diagnostic procedures to see if he can proceed with the bone marrow transplant.
  • We just started a major fund-raising project, Coffee with the President. You are a key part of this campaign. Go to the CwtP YouTube channel and watch this video. It will tell you where to go from there. Please share this with people in your network, friends, relatives, pastors, rich uncles :).
You can also read more about the campaign here.

This is really an important part of the semester. (I know I said this last week. Really every part of the semester is important) If you get work done now, you'll be well on your way to success.

Please Pray:
  • Kyung Tae is one of our students. His wife, Hyung Ji is pregnant. She has been put on bed rest for the welfare of the Baby. If any of you would like to help this family, Talk to Mama Cel.
  • We rejoice that Ben Wheeler, LMUSA missionary in Nigeria was released from captivity.
  • Jody Sam is in Chuuk. His dad, Johnny, is not well.

October 19, Micronesia in Guam:

Greg Calvo, Juan Flores, and some other friends of ours on Guam are presenting a major event at UOG Field House. Musicians from a number of Island communities and churches, as well as some professional musicians, will present a program that tells how the Good News of Jesus Christ has impacted this region. PIU will provide a couple of the songs.
This is a cultural event for all the Guam community and a fundraiser for PIU. PIU will also provide some of the logistical support.
Pray, Participate, and, when you find out more, perhaps later today, spread the word.
Special Note: Big thanks to Mary Garvillas, whose class meets on Thursday nights. She has agreed to rearrange her schedule.

Write me with a question. I may put it, and an answer, in a future IP to Ss edition.

#1, Fall, 2017

Hey PIU-Guam Students, this is the first, Fall-'17, edition of the . . .

Interim President to Students
(IP to Ss) News.

Hey, Students,

It is really hard to believe that so much of this semester is already past. I want to thank you for helping us get off to a really good start. I haven't gotten off to such a good start. I think this is the first time that I've sent a note to you. My goal is to send you one a week, so, obviously, I'm behind. For you new students, WELCOME! For you returning students, WELCOME BACK! You returners already know about these weekly emails.

Let me begin by paying you a compliment.
I have heard numerous people speak about how pleasant it is to work with the PIU students this fall. Thanks for your good attitude.

Congratulations to Jordan Darrow on being chosen Stuco  President.

Be watching for an opportunity to represent the PIU TIDE one of the Women's Volleyball games. Alex will let you know about game when all of PIU will wear the same color shirts. (He would have already done this, but he is waiting for word from a team of fashion consultants to see what color goes best with his eyes.

This is really an important part of the semester. If you get work done now, you'll be well on your way to success.

Please Pray:
  • Kyung Tae is one of our students. His wife, Hyung Ji is pregnant. She has been put on bed rest for the welfare of the Baby. If any of you would like to help this family, Talk to Mama Cel.
  • Dr. Jim Sawyer's grandson, Connor, died about a day ago. Connor was born with a severely deformed heart. Though he only lived five months, he was dearly loved by his family and will be very missed.
  • We just received this from Dave Owen:
    Greetings,
We received our schedule from the transplant nurse today. So it is official that we will begin the transplant process on September 27th. The first step will be several health tests, scans and biopsies to see if my body can handle the process. After that I will pretty much be following the process I wrote about here on my blog:
http://guamdaveo.blogspot.com/2017/09/medical-update-another-stanford.html The actual chemo and transplant process, if all goes well, should begin October 11th and end after a 3 week Stanford hospital stay on November 30th. That would be a
best case scenario. I'll keep everyone informed here, with my blog and on my Facebook page as we get into the process. There will be a 3 month to one year recovery process after the transplant is done. I am hoping that I will be able to be more active and get back involved in ministry some time in the Spring of 2018.

  • Crystal Gosnel is a fellow Liebenzell missionary who works at an orphanage in Nigeria, is currently on furlough in the USA. One of the boys she helps care for died last night. His name is Ethan.
(I'm praying that one of our PIU graduates would step up and step out, and go work with Crystal at Mission of Mercy, MOM. Having watched our students love on children, I am confident that this is a ministry at which you would excel.
  • Pray for student-recruitment and fundraising efforts that are ongoing. (See below.)

A bit of humor: Some of you more Theological types will find this amusing.

October 19, Micronesia in Guam:

I'll be sending out more information on this, but for now, just mark it on your calendar.

Pray, Participate, and, when you find out more, perhaps later today, spread the word.
Special Note: Big thanks to Mary Garvillas, whose class meets on Thursday nights. She has agreed to rearrange her schedule.

Mostly I try to not bother students with the business aspects of running PIU. Your job is to be a good student, and amaze your teachers with the good work you do. I'm making an exception for two efforts that are going on right now:
  1. STUDENT-Recruitment: We are reaching out to potential students. Our desire is to see a significant increase in our student numbers at the start of the Spring Semester. All of you can help by talking to relatives and friends and encouraging them to consider PIU as an educational option. If you would like to be more involved, talk to Alex Tavarez.
  2. FUNDRAISING: I'm putting together a fundraising/friend-raising campaign called "Coffee with the President." I should be able to show it to you in about a week. Right now, though, be thinking about people you know, home church, friends, people in influential positions, with whom we could share this opportunity. If you tell someone, "PIU is worthy of your support," they are much more likely to watch the video and participate. Watch for more information.

Write me with a question. I may put it, and an answer, in a future IP to Ss edition.
