Summer School:

Students and staff have been asking about summer school. We are planning to have summer school classes. We will get details out as soon as possible. OUr schedule will follow the pattern we have used in the past. There will be an early session and a later session. It is possible that a class, or some classes will be taught across both sessions. Urte and Hartmut Scherer are working on this.
We will not be operating the dorms for our summer sessions.
I'll get more information to you, as soon as I have it.

You can find a bunch more pictures on Facebook, and here. Thanks Gary and Hartmut.

Part 2 on Remembering:
A while back the students in PHIL 200 worked on a project, How to remember what I need to remember so that I can think about what I need to think about. here is nothing really new here, but it is very good stuff. Over the next few weeks, I'll include some of the classes ideas.

Here are some suggestions from class members:

  • "Own a personal notebook to keep daily activities (planner)
  • Each week, write your schedule in the right days and time
  • Look over it daily.
  • On the mirror make notes, so that every morning you see the important things that you need to do that day.
  • Set an alarm in your phone, or on your laptop (since you’re always on your phone) to remind you of upcoming events, or important meetings.
  • Buy a notebook or a calendar notebook (like Kat’s)
  • When I get notified of what needs to be done in the future jot it down right away
  • Always check my notebook planner
  •  Write it on a sticky note
  • Post it on my mirror
  •  When notified of what needs to be done, jot it down on my calendar on the day it needs to be done
  • Always check my calendar
Make sure you have a plan to remember key deadlines, tests,due-dates, etc.
Here's part of my plan. I sometimes send myself emails. I always read email from me.

Seniors,
What are you doing next?
It's a conversation you ought to be having. People who care are available to talk with you. Let us know.

Not that you need any encouragement to wander the web, but here are a couple of sites with good information or just fun:
Please send me a note, hmerrell@piu.edu, so I know this is getting to you, and so I know that I have the best email for you.
Most of you are going to be here until the end of the semester. We might as well make the most of it!

Students,

When you start back in your classes on Tuesday, you'll be in an intense part of the semester. For those of you who are graduating, even more so.  Some of you could go either way academically. See your teacher. We want you to succeed. If there is a way, we will help you.

Monday is a prayer emphasis day. I encourage you to find a couple of  fellow-students and stop in the President's office for a time of prayer.

PIU Days was a great weekend. Thanks for letting Kathy and me be a part. (Not apart. We don't like that. We enjoy being together, but "a part," as in a participant. That stuff Dot Houde teaches you is important.)  It was fun!

  • Some of you live where electronic devices don't always work.
My personal plan is to get a calendar notebook for myself because where I come from we do not have electricity. So to remember what I need to remember I should have a calendar notebook and not only depend on computer and cell phone because it cannot work all the time. I should also not depended on someone to remind me because that someone may forget to remind me. So I believe it is a good plan to own a calendar book to help me remember what I need to remember.

  • Your plan doesn't need your plan doesn't need to be just one thing.
  1.   I have marked my Calendar
  2.   I have my schedule on my door so I can remember what I need to do for the day
  3. I also set my alarm in my phone to remind me my time for homework.
  • Another student picked up on #3 above, Since I see so manycell phones around, I'll let that student repeat it.
    Set an alarm
in your phone, or on your laptop (since you’re always on your phone) to remind you of upcoming events, or important meetings.

Here's part of my plan. If you see me wandering around like I'm lost, help me get to where I need to be next. :)

People are investing a lot to make it possible for you to study.

Make the most of it.

Hey PIU-Guam Students, this is the first edition of the . . .

Interim President to Students
(IP to Ss) News.

Enjoy your Spring Break . . .
But don't miss the opportunity it gives you.

I have been using internet, email, etc. to stay in touch with the faculty and staff, but so far I haven't done the same with the students. I'll try to correct that. My plan is to send out an IP to Ss, once a week. (I'm using Mail Chimp to do this, so please send a note back to me so I'll know that you want to be on the mailing list.)

You guys have a lot of reading to do, so I'll keep my communication short.

3 things this week:
  1. Some advice: Be wise. Use this week to catch up on reading, papers, and other work for your classes.
  2. Be kind. Help your roommates and friends make the most of their time. Keeping them awake all night doesn't help them get their work done.
  3. Have fun, like tonight at the movie time.
  4. OK, I know I said 3, but this one is a bonus. Recruit a student. Right now new students have the option of getting a substantial discount. If you are the key person to bringing a new student, you could get a $60 discount. ". . . continuing/returning students who bring a friend with them who is also admitted and begins classes will receive $60 off."  Find out more in The Tide's Current.
All of you did a great job with PIU Days!
One more cheer for the PIU Volleyball Team

I thought you might like to see a picture of my family. This was taken about six months ago.

Here is one that's a bit more serious.

Write me with a question. I may put it, and an answer, in a future IP to Ss edition.
By His Grace,
    The IP
